  1. It’s a simple way to mimic F1, where all the frontrunners usually start on the softest tyre having qualified on it. I think the purpose is also to help strategy – 90% of races would be easy one stops with free tyre choice.

It means it’s a bit of a survival tyre at some tracks, but that’s just something to factor into strategy.

  2. This week is a classic case as without the rule everybody would probably do 1-stop softs.

With the rule, you can try 1-stop US,S (but you will have to manage the US) or 2-stop US + any combo of US/SS/S and you might even change strategy mid-stint if you are stuck in traffic – so a 2-stop US,SS,SS might change to dumping the USs early and going the rest on S to get the jump on the guys in front.

Would only impose this rule for full fuelling, with refuelling, boring strategies are inevitable.

  3. I was unconvinced about this softest tyre start rule when Bobby first suggested it, but it seems to work rather well :)

    • It’s a hard concept to grab that you can take away choices and it actually gives people more choices, though obviously not the ones they want ;)

For me, this race would be 1-stop Softs, end of Story and I know my teammate would do the same.

As it stands though, I don’t know what I’m going to do – see how long the ultras last I guess.

  4. By the way I forgot to mention Bob’s last physics’ change are very good. I feel the car much better now (over/underseer behavior). Thumb up Bob!

  5. I think the only issue left with this car is that the power delivery is too smooth (mine & Kunos’) – that’s for next season :)

    • The “boss” of Formula Trout, a league like ACLH which we might be forming a partnership with. Who’s ACLH? OK, perhaps I need to speak later – nothing mysterious, just more people who share our hobby.

  6. So pissed off, I’m not even loading anything up tonight. It’s not like me, but every time I got going again I’m battered off the park. For pace and strategy I know I should have battling Storm Cloud and jan probably succumbing on the last laps, but instead I’m a wounded soldier fighting at the back. 3 crashes all unavoidable and one frame freeze in the middle of an overtake.

Heyho, nice battles with Coretex & Syntax at the end. I did everything I could to hold them off, but had no car left!

Will be back to normal, calm, boring Bobby after a beer – or three :)

    • I think we really had some nice racing too. It could have been quite a bit shorter if I had gotten the DRS beep, but at least this way I had some fun.

I’d like to know what you think of the incident we had when I came out of the pits. I felt like I did nothing wrong, as we were racing for position and we were side by side going into it. I was also prepared to stick to the inside to give you room to go around the outside. I didn’t see why I should have just surrendered it. Then again, I believe that in simracing most people would have gone for the apex like you did. Just kind of unfortunate imo.

    • I think I am ahead going in and have 2 choices to avoid contact – either back out completely or go onto the grass. If it’s a corner, you are 100% right and me 100% wrong – but it’s not, it’s a chicane and someone has to bail out and I’m tired of that always having to be me. I also think that I will shut up 100% when the stewards discuss this as we have both said everything here and it’s unfair to influence them even 1% – in fact, maybe I shouldn’t be part of the stewarding at all, I already do enough.

  7. Cheers Bob. It’s my second beer already… This season is terrific for me. Here I made one big mistake. I changed my race setup at the last second and it ‘definitely’ was the bad decision as I didn’t recognize the behavior at all compared to the training I did.
    Grats to the winner(s).
Well, I hope to see the end of the black tunnel very soon… Collecting the DNF’s actually. :(

  8. Good race. Happy with 3rd on the grid but I apparently got a monster start and thought about diving for the outside in T1, Thought my start couldn’t be that good so it must’ve been lag and I decided to be extra cautious in T1 and lap 1.

Got settled in, making sure I was ready for Mostafa having an attack, which put me 2 seconds behind Jan on lap 2. He was also 2 seconds ahead on lap 29, which sounds like a mega race but I never got close enough for DRS and the gap bobbled around 2-4 seconds for the entire race! I guess Jan had a bit in hand and fresher tyres at the end so probably not as close as it looks. I didn’t make any major errors, worst was cocking up a brakemarker and slowing 50m too early on lap 2. See you in Bahrain!

  9. That 3rd DRS Zone, did anyone else have a wobble overtaking there? I certainly did and I think our car is more stable than the real thing, so could be an interesting weekend.

  10. I enjoyed this race very much. I changed few things in setup from last time and it worked out perfectly. I think it was easy possible to finish race with 1 stop, but when mostafa came to 2nd pit, i decided also to do it.

I went out straight ahead of Storm, but then on resh tyres it was very easy till the end, i was just looking after the tyres and wanted to drive the car home :) it´s just a shame that oliver couldn´t use what he trained, hope we´ll be better next time as a team.

See you in Bahrain (also my favourite)

  11. I’ll try to come back in force in Bahrain. I’m struggling actually when it’s time for race. I need to catch back the pace I’m able to have… Honestly also, some new drivers are kind of ‘too’ agressive. I need to pass through it.
    Thanks Jan. :)

  12. Well, I had to guess with the car and the new compounds and now we know it’s a bit too quick. This is good because extra grip with AC is also a bit boring, so I’m gonna slow it down a bit today.

Hope you don’t mind all this tinkering, but I do want to make our experience as close as poss to the real thing.

    • Ready when you are Mr D. Perhaps Albert Park in AC is too fast as well as the car – more grippy tarmac, no wind, lower track temps. Worth bearing in mind we have no engine modes, no fuel saving, no engine saving etc.

If the SF71H continues to get fettled then maybe we can use it in future seasons this year?

    • That’s actually the idea – this season has been a bit odd in that all the tracks have been high friction, so most races are survival tyre followed by race tyre. We havent had the chance to use hypers/ultras somewhere that really suits them. Next season would have Canada, possibly Monaco (would def need the SC there) and even Monza if we stretched it.

  13. PS:- I don’t have a clue with the DRS app – all I did was add a tiny bit of code. Basically, there is a section of where the app sends a chat message to say you’ve used DRS illegally – in there I inserted an “angry” beep.

I will seek the help of the master of code, “Rhobium”.

  14. I had a play with the car and it is easy to make it slower of course, but the changes I made are not significant enough to warrant everyone replacing their data files, so I think we “KEEP THE CAR THE SAME” for the rest of the season.

Also, one thing I noticed at Melbourne is that they avoid kerbs like the Plague, where we take liberties – this is worth at least a second in lost time and I’m not changing the kerb behaviour as it such a relief to drive an AC F1 car that doesn’t react badly to them.

At the season end I will do something radical just to spice it up a bit – the key will be to get the back end “dancing” a bit, but also telling you what tune it’s dancing to.

DRS app is far more important!
